Do you remember summer as a kid? I do. What are some of your fond memories? Some of my most vivid memories are playing outside from morning until dark, running around barefoot and never putting on shoes unless I was told to do so (Boooo!), swimming in my friend's pool for hours, sunburns, root beer popsicles, running through sprinklers, and swinging on my swing set. These memories were all about fun in the sun without a care in the world.
Since I have grown up, the notion of playing outside from morning until night has disappeared and so have many of the other memories. However, I still to this day try to hold on and recreate as many of them as I can. I have also added some new ones.
I still love walking around barefoot as much as I possibly can. And if you know me, the shoes I wear most often in the summer, and I have been known to wear them in the winter as well, are flip flops. Love them!! I also still swim a lot. I am so thankful that I have a pool and love using it. Maybe swimming was not quite the right word; floating is what I really do the most.
I always use sunscreen so the sunburns have diminished and I rarely eat popsicles. I do make a killer Rosé Crushed Ice. It is a delightful and refreshing adult treat during a hot summer day.
Gardening is a newer spring and summer joy of mine. I am sure most of you have been following our gardening adventures, trials, and tribulations. As a kid, one of my chores was to help out in the yard. We did not have a vegetable garden, but we had a lot of grass, flowers, and of course, weeds. I used to pick the flowers to use as a topper for my beautiful mud pies I would make. Yes, I made mud pies outside and decorated them with flowers. I really wish there were photos of these fabulous creations.
What are some of your favorite memories of being a kid in the summer? I challenge you to recreate some of those fond memories this month. Walk around barefoot, splash around in a pool, or get crazy and eat a popsicle. Have fun and be carefree; it's summertime!
